Pathology Between China and the West and the Crisis of the Chinese Identity So the book I decided to do for my book review is The Afterlife of Images: Translating the Pathological Body Between China and the West. In the introduction of the book the author finds it important to state how she came to the point on writing the book. As the author was working in the National Palace Museum researching representations of pathology in modern art, a colleague pointed out a picture in showed a boy with smallpox. The picture was part of an exhibition at the time called â€Å"Comparison of Chinese and World Cultures†. In this exhibit there were two timelines; a Chinese and Western one. The aim of both timelines was to form a visual comparison of†¦show more content†¦In other words an image that was used in order to be able to properly diagnose and contain the disease through inoculation and that was a symbol of technological prowess in the eyes of the Chinese had become a symbol for underdevelopment, as the Chinese came to be identified with a vulnerabil ity to disease. The goal of this book is to trace the development and the origins of the various medical iconographies that ended up connecting the Chinese identity with illness subjugation at the dawn of modernity. By doing so, it tries to point the various outlines of the varied contexts in which the meanings of medical representations were created and transformed in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. It focuses on the medical rhetoric, the study and application of persuasive language and symbols in medicine, and the iconography of missionaries in China that brought back to the West this perception of a sick China or otherwise known as â€Å"Sick Man of Asia† (Heinrich, pg 4). Furthermore, it also studies how these ideas found their way back to China through missionaries, early translations of Western medical texts to Chinese, and through Chinese literature itself. Unfortunately, their true love for one another proved to be forbidden by both their families. If not for the tragic end, this play may have even been described as a fairy tale. In this production Of Romeo and Juliet, the Missouri Theatre did a magnificent job in recreating the lavishly ornate costumes characteristic of this Renaissance period. From Lady Capulet, to the servants, the eye-catching costumes offered a tantalizing depiction of these characters social status. Lady Capulet’s costume was the most impressive detailed and beautiful, and represented her character and personality the best. The first character that I analyzed in â€Å"Romeo and Juliet,† was the young Lady Capulet. She is the wife of the sixty year-old Lord Capulet, and the mother of the young and beautiful Juliet. Women decided to abandon the restricting and plain clothing that they wore and started to wear exoctic clothing and makeup. Men also abandoned the normal attire and began to wear athletic loose clothing. Coco Chanel did much to further the emancipation and freedom of women’s fashion. For the first time in centuries, women’s legs were seen with hemlines rising to the knee and dresses becoming more fitted. A more masculine look became popular, including flattened breasts and hips, short hairstyles such as the bob cut, Eton crop and the Marcel wave. The fashion was bohemian and forthcoming for its age. In menswear there were two distinct periods in the 1920s. Throughout the decade, men wore short suit jackets, the old long jackets being used merely for formal occasions. In the early 1920s, men’s fashion was characterized by extremely high-waisted jackets, often worn with belts. Lapels on suit jackets were not very wide as they tended to be buttoned up high. This style of jacket seems to have been greatly influenced by the uniforms worn by the military during the First World War. Trousers were relatively narrow and straight and they were worn rather short so that a man’s socks often showed. Trousers also began to be worn cuffed at the bottom at this time. By 1925, wider trousers commonly known as Oxford bags came into fashion, while suit jackets returned to a normal waist and lapels became wider and were often worn peaked. Loose-fitting sleeves without a taper also began to be worn during this period. During the late 1920s, double-breasted vests, often worn with a single-breasted jacket, also became quite fashionable. During the 1920s, men had a variety of sport clothes available to them, including sweaters and short trousers, commonly known as knickers. For formal occasions in the daytime, a morning suit was usually worn. For evening wear men preferred the short tuxedo to the tail coat, which was now seen as rather old-fashioned and snobby. During the 1920s, the notion of keeping up with fashion trends and expressing oneself through material goods seized middle-class Americans as never before.
